Please go read this article, published by the Independent, regarding the Britons recently released from Guantanamo Bay.
I think the thing I find most disturbing is the lack of oversight in places like Guantanamo Bay. It is the same thing that I find compellingly wrong with the PATRIOT Act. We have safeguards in place to protect our civil and human rights throught our legal process. Under normal circumstances, authority must present due cause and due process must be applied. If nothing else, then there is at least the public scrutiny to hold our system of justice accountable. Even that fails at times. Under the PATRIOT Act and in situations like the one at Guantanamo Bay, these people are answering to no one.
We justify going into Iraq because of the brutal regime that controlled the country. How many times have we heard about the torture rooms and the people who just disappeared in the night for opposing the Iraqi government? How is what we are doing in Guantanamo Bay so different? If these people who are being detained are guilty, then so be it, let them be tried and then go to work on them.
It's just plain wrong, what's happening. It kinda pisses me off.
