Do not peel it back to see what is underneath!
Not unless you want to remodel your entire bathroom.
The underlayment to the vinyl was WET and MOLDY. EW! Now our bathroom has gone from something vaguely resembling a bathroom to ghetto-bathroom!
Okay, things were already in progress here but you can see we used to have a nice little bathroom with beige tile (okay, okay it has pink grout- it was like that when we moved in!). Yes, that is a wrecking bar on the counter. You'll see in a second what one of those can do to a perfectly good bathroom in just under one day's time.
But here is what transpired: I pulled up the floor and to do that I had to take out the toilet. Once I pulled up the floor I noticed the underlying water damage extended under the vanity so that had to come out. That required taking the tiles off the wall which led to some big holes getting poked in the sheetrock. And then I decided we had to repipe all the plumbing since we had some holes in the wall anyway...
Which led to this:
The plumber is coming tomorrow to start repiping. I have to go pick out a new bathtub. I'm thinking I'll get a nice deep one.
Yeah, I could use a floor and some walls, too. Luckily, when we brought back all those cabinets we picked up a couple vanities, too. One less thing I have to get! I have a cute white one with bead board accents on it. Our general conractor suggested cultured marble for the tub surround and floor and vanity top. Sounds good to me!
Can I just say, I love my hammer. Okay, it is my dad's hammer. But it's mine now because I stole it. It busts up walls pretty good. Truth be told, I hate beige and I really hate pink so I was more than excited to bust the tile up and the rotten underlament was a great excuse.
Lucky for me(us?) the subfloor is fine. We've got 2x5" planking with NO JOISTS. That's right, we have girders (4x6 beams) every 48", but not your typical joist structure. It is very sturdy, however, and has clearly held up. Whoever put that vinyl in was ridiculous because they out PARTICLE BOARD under it. That should be ILLEGAL. That stuff just wicked up the water and held it and turned into sawdust. I was shoveling stuff out of the bathroom.
I'm hoping to end up with a nice white bathroom that I can color-up with some bright towels and bath rugs but won't have to bust up again for years to come.
In other news, no word on Avery yet. I'm working on getting appointments lined up with a pediatric congenital heart specialist at Stanford and then the neuro guy, as well. I'm much better, in fact, so much so it looks like I get to go ahead with surgery scheduled on July 12th. I figure while they are patching my guts up maybe I'll have some work done elsewhere- lipo the saddle bags? lift the boot-ay? What do you think? At least then I'll have something to look forward to.
